History of Medical Marijuana in Arkansas

Medical Marijuana and Cannabis in Arkansas has a well documented history. From the point that marijuana was outlawed in 1923 until 2016 when it was legalized for medical purposes there were a number of tactics used to instill fear in the masses. Now that states across the nation have shown a proven record of success both for recreational and medicinal use the general public appears to be much less apprehensive about it.

What’s even more exciting is the potential for more positive changes in the Medical Marijuana and Cannabis Industry in Arkansas with the upcoming election. The November ballot measures could result in over 1/3 of American’s having RECREATIONAL access to it! In fact, a planned house vote on legalizing marijuana at the federal level was scheduled for the end of September, but later postponed. Don’t let that discourage you, because the MORE Act is considered the greatest attempt at cannabis reform to date. That is promising.

What is NOT promising, however, is the fact that no parties have championed cannabis reform and the MORE act could most likely be regarded as more of a symbolic move than one that will actually precipitate true reform.

Either way, we are hopeful that the changes that began in November of 2016, whenever Arkansas voters approved issue 6, will continue to evolve and bring positive benefits to every facet of the state. Reports as of October 2020 suggest that there is a major shortage of flower throughout the state. With more Arkansas Medical Marijuana Cards being issued, some worry if we will ever gain our footing. According to the Arkansas Department of Health’s website there are 85,000 active cards and the number continues to grow every day. Either way, it’s clear that the industry is booming in Arkansas and just the mere fact that we are experiencing these growth pains proves that it’s a good industry to be a part of. There’s clearly a need for more cultivators and dispensaries, and we expect that as those licenses are handed out and the industry grows the competition will leave only the best and the brightest standing.
